Lavender Mountain

This is my newest painting "Lavender Mountain" painted over the past week.  I am truly inspired by aspen trees and mountains since that is the view from my window.  The colors of the mountains change daily according to the light.  In the morning sunrise they are pink, on a foggy day they are dark green, and at sunset they are lavender.  So beautiful.  The light also reflects on the aspen trees.  Today it is rain turning to snow with the top of Bergen Peak in a cloud.  The meadow is gold, the trees are yellow, green and blue, Painters Pause Path is purple.  I had a student in one of my painting classes who had never seen a purple path.  They do exist.  It is all in the painter's eye.  You might think rocks are brown - I am seeing red, orange and yellow.  That trees are green - I am seeing green, yellow, and orange.  It all depends on the light and the atmosphere.  Look outside and have some fun with what you are looking at.  Let your imagination wander.

I am so ready for spring.  I saw 5 robins outside my studio window jumping around in the snow and chirping away.  It seems a little early for them to be in Evergreen.  How about "Springtime Aspen" - I'm seeing buds on the aspen trees!  This painting will be in the Alliance Artists of Evergreen Show "Spring Time in the Rockies" at the Center for the Arts Evergreen Rotary Gallery at Center Stage in March and April.  Opening reception and meet the artists March 16th from 4-6 p.m.  Join me and the other Alliance Artists of Evergreen for a glass of wine and some outstanding hors d'hoevres.

Painting Nocturnes

I have recently taken on the ominous task of trying to create nocturn paintings in watercolor.  My nocturnes are light and shadow and tonal paintings.  Tonal paintings have no light, just varying values from black to white.  In my light and shadow paintings, I choose a color for the sky and ground and a color for the light and shadow it reflects.  I then add a little chinese white to the dark color.  I will then change the painting by adding a mother color like orange or pink to all of the colors and do a painting.  That's how I get a pink glow or an orange glow.  It is so challenging and so much fun.  Check out my website http://cathyjonesart.com, click on Works, and scroll down to Nocturnes to see what I have created.  The painting I have posted is Remington's howling wolf with the mother color of orange.  See more on my website of the howling wolf along with two landscapes.
